Scripture Memory and Meditation
|
One unique
aspect of Joy Riders is the way we try to grow spiritually together by practicing Scripture memory and/or
meditation during rides. We call these memory verses GRIPS (see explanation at right). You are free to
select your own verses and practice at your own pace, or utilize the suggested CORE verses. It might be helpful
if you and a partner worked on the same verses together during the ride. It is recommended that you write/type
out verses on a 3X5 card and refer to them periodically during the ride. Pictured below is a cue clip
that I've found very helpful in clipping the cards to my handlebar during the ride. Finally, to really keep them in
memory, you will need a system of review. A good link is listed below that will describe the practice of Scripture memory
more fully.

GRIPS
You know, those spoungy, rubbery things you hold on to at the end
of the handle bar (forgive the analogy if you are a roadie using bars with tape). Why call Scripture verses
"GRIPS"? One purpose of grips is to provide comfort, certainly Scripture does this. However, the most important
function of grips is to provide a secure hold (grip) on the bar so we can direct the bike where it should go. If
we hold on firmly to Scripture and use it to guide our life, we are going to become the person we are meant to be.
But the real reason.....it's just more fun to call things by
the names of bicycle parts than it is to call it "a Scripture verse to memorize." Have fun and God bless!
